An Outfit (Deconstructed) ...

Not unlike (I'm guessing) winter in say Chicago or Minneapolis, Summer in Texas requires dressing for seriously fluctuating temperatures. Outside it can be triple digits while every building in town is frigid with air conditioning, so layering is essential.

As such, this week's outfit pretty much represents my Summer "uniform"... some sort of thin dress + a light cardigan that goes on the minute I step inside a building.

I pretty much live in the cardigan above...but it's getting long in the tooth, so I'm on the look-out for a new one. I have my eye on this lovely from J.Crew in smoke but am open to suggestions, as it's hard to find good cardies in the middle of summer.

The Details:

  • Dress -- Converse for Target (I swapped out the navy slip that the dress came with for a nude one, as I really liked the look of skin peeking through the "lace".)
  • Cardigan -- Super old from Banana Republic
  • Necklace -- Homemade
  • Bracelets -- Vintage + bangles from Gilt + this bracelet by F. is for Frank (which is by far one of my very favorite pieces of jewelry...)
  • Shoes -- Givenchy scored at an epic Barneys sale

  4. I just bought 2 chelsea cardigans (classic) from NY & Co.--deep purple and powder blue. They are so soft and the buttons are super cute! They're on sale online, but there were more color options in the store...

  6. Can we see a close up of the necklace? please? and maybe a how-to!?!?

I have a few GAP cardigans that I wear in heavy rotation. Summer in OKC is exactly as you described. These are vneck and 3/4 sleeve, so I like them for summer. I recently got them, so I am sure they are still in store.

  8. I'm really loving these outfit segments! A good reminder that, oh yeah, getting dressed doesn't have to be as complicated or impossible as I make it!

You look fantastic. Thanks for the tips!

  9. You look fab! Dallas is wayyy to hot in the summer, so I'm always wearing a skirt or a dress with a cardigan to cover up with, but my collection is lacking!

  13. Fabulous! I rarely accessories anymore. You've done it so well. I have a couple of Converse dresses that I probably wear too often. Given our Seattle weather, I often have cropped skinny jeans on as well. I am loving the Converse pieces at Target, but I hope to see more of the organic options Converse offered about a year back.

  20. I just bought this dress in white and was going to dye it. I'm gonna exchange it for the blue though! Much more my mama style.
On a different note, but still style related, did you see this in the recent NYtimes travel mag:

  21. I'm going to have to try that dress on. Very lovely.

I'm loving the new Lands end Canvas collection. I bought two of their light-weight cotton cardigans and wish I could get them all. I love the shape.

  23. What an incredibly chic outfit! I say go for the cardi from J.Crew. Good cardies are worth spending a little extra for. I have a favorite red one from H&M that I refuse to give up, even though it's stretched out and has holes. I will always buy my cardigans from better quality stores as a result. Those shoes are incredible!!

  24. oh....i have to tell you, i wanted that same j.crew cardigan, until i tried it on. sadly, it's not nearly as ethereal and lovely in person. much more, well, oversized and blah. i was crushed. just ordered the scholar cardi from madewell instead...i'll let you know if it's genius ;)

  26. this is my kind of dressing. something to look back on in 1, 5, or 10 years and not think, 'what was i thinking' but rather, i (you) look damn good! and didn't spend a fortune.
