I am a lone baker. It’s therapeutic. One of my favorite parts of the book Alice Waters and Chez Panisse was the description of the restaurant’s first pastry chef (and partner), Lindsey Shere, creating all of the desserts in a little shed behind the restaurant. Right before dinner she would run her creations across a path to the restaurant, sometimes under an umbrella in the pouring rain… I love that image. Total bliss that job, no?
But when I cook a meal, I love nothing more than the camaraderie and mild chaos of cooking with a few other people. I can’t wait to spend Thursday in the kitchen with my family turning out a huge meal.
Total bliss that job too…

I completely agree with you. My boyfriend and I always cook dinner together (when we're not on opposite coasts), but the baking he leaves to me, though he'll usually hang around in the kitchen and read while I busy myself with the mixing. It's really nice to be able to take daily tasks like cooking and make them so much more fun.

I too am a lone baker- oddly, I usually don't even eat the things I bake. It pleases me most to work to pretty music, then let the smells of pies or cookies baking entice my family into the kitchen!
However, I like the idea of cooking in cooperation (but I prefer to keep the tasks rather distinct and not get bumped into!) Have you read Alice Waters' childrens' book Fanny at Chez Panisse? It was one of my favorites as a little girl, and the images of everyone moving nimbly and cheerfully in the kitchen have always inspired me.
I suppose it's about time that I read one of her grown-up books, eh? Especially since I'm moving to a new apartment just a few blocks away from Chez Panisse in February!!

you definitely need to read her biography since you'll be living right around the corner (jealous ;-) it's such a cool story about how the restaurant came to be etc...
