Wednesday – What I Bought (And What I’d Like To…)

First up the wish list because it’s so much more exciting…. I'm jonesin for everything above -- all from Urban Outfitters (necklace, book, pillow, rug, stapler), which I have to say has some pretty rockin stuff of late.

Now for what I actually bought this week -- Two dresses. One of the dresses I feel pretty good about. It's a simple Mexican style white frock that I found at a local shop. I've been looking for a casual white summer dress, in fact I found the perfect one on ebay, but with all the recital hoopla this week-end, I lost the auction by a $1. (curse you ebay auctions that end on Saturdays!) But the one I ended up with was an acceptable substitute... + it wasn't an impulse buy, I bought local and the price was right, so all is good.

The second dress is just a little black tunic from Target. I'm really, really trying to stop buying clothes from Target altogether*, so this feels a little like a failure to me. The tags are still on it, so it might be a candidate for return...we'll see.

* --in case you're wondering why... I also posted this in my comments:
my main motivation for not buying clothes from Target is my desire to move away from "disposable clothes." My ultimate goal is to have a "French" closet -- far fewer clothes, but nicer, better made, longer lasting, more special.

That said, it's HARD...Target has cute clothes, they're cheap, a quick fix. And if it's something "trendy", I don't want to spend a lot on it. So there's a middle ground I'm sure...I just have to find it.

LOVE that necklace...i posted about it yesterday. wouldn't it look fabulous with a plain tank and some skinny jeans and heels?

I'm really trying to stop buying close from Target too. Why for you? For me it's that usually they are impulse buys and also they just don't hold up.

Wow, what beautiful choices from UO. They really do have great stuff lately.

I buy a lot of clothes from Target-mainly because it is a minute away from my house and I go there at least once a week. Those impulse buys get me every time.

Those are awesome. Any particular reason you're cracking down on Target spending?

When I was getting dressed this morning I passed over an ill-fitting shirt from Target and said the same thing to myself.

That book has such a pretty cover.

U.O. has some incredible finds. i love their selection of random bits and bobs! I would love to see the dresses you bought, I'm positive they'll both be wonderful and look smashing on you!

target...its practical...cheap..but not made well and everyone wears the same things. Ha! like us. I am laughing. i think basics are okay from there always...just not the wow of the outfit.

And yes...Miss Aimee and I have at least 5 of the exact same shirts from Target that we both bought unwittingly!

urban has some seriously great finds lately... i bought my wedding shoes there!

i too am trying to wean myself from target (and forver 21) purchases... i'm especially prone to buying sundresses. i have a closet full!

quality over quantity seems to be the message these days.

I'm trying to drop Target as well, but it's so much harder than it should be!
If you keep on with your sewing classes, you could be whipping up little tunics on your own - that's my new goal.

what is that super cool lost crafts book?? i might need to investigate that further.

perhaps a trip to UO is in order at lunch. Very dangerous having UO 1/2 a block from my office. especially when blogging friends entice me with their wares.

I never picked up the Target clothes shopping habit (not to sound snotty) because I could never justify paying their full retail price. I could save my money and buy something on sale at Anthropologie or the like.

I'm currently trying to give up on Old Navy, which is only a fraction of a step above Target.

i totally agree on the target dilema. i actually try to avoid the clothing area for fear that I will completely cave and buy something!

right there with you on the disposable thing. where is that middle ground?? i end up spending all my $ on the trendy quick fix and never have anything saved for the investment pieces!?

a couple of years ago, i was trying on the 'french closet' theory. i thought, "ok, if i spend more on clothes, they will be well-made and last longer." alas, no. almost everything i purchased fell apart just as quickly as the target clothes. now, i just try to buy less, buy items that suit my style (not trends), and fit well...it doesn't matter whether they come from some fancy pants place or my beloved target. :D

Urban outfitters is a great place to shop! I love their stuff.

It's hard to find good clothes these days. Especially ones that last and aren't so thin or cheap.

Great picks from urban. Always a fun store to wonder around and to get unique pieces.

I totally agree about Target spending. I want to get the good and timeless pieces for my wardrobe. But it is seems to be easier said than done. Good luck to us!

i'm totally with you on the disposable closet vs. the 'french' closet. for trendier pieces i stick to forever21, knowing i will love them for a season, but jeans and such are worth the splurge! i say invest in good basics, but switch up the accessories. just like i design a room! neutral palettes, change out the pillows. done and done ;)

ah, i too perscribe to the "french closet" theory. classics. that is my style and i love being able to not worry about the shifting trends so much as buying well made clothes that fit me :) love your blog, btw!

Oh, I adore that pillow! I think that is one item I could not have resisted. Also, would love to have a "french" closet too! Always nice to have something to work towards:)
