I’d let Audrey wear this dress every. single. day. if it were in our possession… (image via design is mine)I have some pretty strong feelings about kid’s clothes. I aim for frumpy over even remotely skimpy or too “grown-up” every single time I buy clothes for the girlies. Perhaps to a fault, as one of my close friends recently (sweetly…I think) told me that I dress the girls like Amish kids… And then this weekend my mom and I were watching Once, and she noted that Marketa Irglova’s character dressed just like Audrey (she spends most of the movie clad in long skirts layered over tights + socks and sweaters + big scarves.)
Surprisingly I was not offended by either comment.
Honestly much of this vagabond chic is a result of me essentially letting Audrey dress herself… She layers clothes with abandon and passionately believes that if two different items are printed with flowers they automatically match.
I do have a few rules, and as the girls get older I’m sure I’ll have a few more (especially since I’ll likely not be purchasing all of their clothes therefore eliminating some of the control I currently have over their sartorial choices), but generally I’m all about self-expression in this area.

love this too. looked at my little muffin the other day (i still get to dress her cause she's only ten months) and thought: hmm. you dress just like me, but tiny. and cuter.
I 100% agree with you! I love the way my niece dresses herself in layers. I can't stand when little kids dress like grown-ups. I think this is wonderful!

I don't have kids yet, but one of my favorite things about hanging around with my friends daughters is the way they dress. no one looks better than a little girl in striped tights with flowered dresses and plaid jackets all in bright miss matched colors who picked out her own outfit and is confident in and delighted by her choices!
I wish more women I knew felt that way when they got dressed.

I think I have some Indian fabric at my Mom's that may/may not look like that. I must have bought it 16 years ago.
There is a very gypsy/russian sort of element in layering which I love.
I wouldn't consider this Amish! Though of course this is the only picture I've seen of your little girl. I adore the dress, and layers is the best way a girl can dress!
And Marketa has fabulous style, especially in Once. I would take that as a compliment, personally! Gotta have some fun with dressing the girls when they're young! ;)
If your daughter is already rockin' the layers, it sounds like she could be on her way to becoming a fashionista :)
I know my mom let us dress ourselves, but she had to edit us sometime. Like the time I decided Christmas sweaters were totally appropriate for July. I like kids dressing like they want though- they'll be censored enough when they're older. Plus, I've seen enough scary moms dressing their elementary school aged kids like mini strippers to think that doing the Amish thing isn't so bad after all. It is so sad when young girls are already dressing sexy. I'd rather my daughter just be cute.

I love the way your girls dress! And I totally agree with your philosophy. Leah is very tall so at age 4 she wears a size 6. Shopping is interesting - most things her size seem to have a mini-rock-star look - so I appreciate the brands that let little girls be just that!

My little lady and I somewhat dress alike. Not sure if I dress like a kid or she dresses older. That is one reason I love to make her clothes, she loves those the most. My big no way will you wear that till you are out of the house is a bikini. Hence my love for one pieces, ha!
Actually, whenever I see a snapshot of Audrey on your blog I always think she's dressing sort of like the Olsen twins. And aren't Mary Kate and Ashley considered fashion vanguards? Are they not photographed the world over in their fab boho duds? Are they not trendsetters?
I think your kids look darn cool. In fact, I tried the dress with tights look the other day but I couldn't rock it like Audrey.

That is exactly how I want to be with my little munchkin! She is only 6 months right now but never leaves the house without patterned tights and a giant bow! I don't know if the bow part really goes with this post, but I just love them!
