images by Roland Bello (seriously could I love this guy more?)...they seemed to somehow capture my mantra
Ok, so after much consternation, I’ve finally decided on my resolutions for this year. You’d think after all the thought I’ve put into this, they’d be awfully exciting, like hers (“dress up like Native Americans much more often”) or hers (“Go roller skating with the roller dancers in Central Park at least once.”) I mean come on, how fun is that???
Suffice to say, mine are not that fun, but they’re the things I really, really want to accomplish this year. I also came up with five words (because I couldn’t pick just one) that I’ve written in a few spots as a sort of mantra, as they pretty much encompass how I want to live this year.

Simplify, Minimize, Learn, Create, Appreciate
And herewith the resolutions…
- Don’t buy anything new for three months (Jan 10-April 10)
- Learn to sew
- Take Audrey to first Saturdays at the Nasher every month
- Take Bikram yoga once a week
- Create something every week (i.e. a great meal, some art, a little vignette in the house)
- Go on an official grown up date with Bryan once a month
- Take my vitamins every. single. day. (boring I know)
- Dress and shop (when I start shopping again) like a French woman (yes, I totally nabbed this one from Joanna)

whew! that no buying one is tough! i admire it, but is there a loophole, by chance? can you buy old things? best of luck and happy new year!
not buying anything new is such a good idea but i would probably go on a shopping binge in the next 2 days if I made that resolution.
learning to sew is on my list too.
Those are wonderful resolutions! And the words to live by are especially moving... so much so that I think I have to copy!
No shopping... whew. that's a tough one.
Nice list! I see there's nothing about banning delicious chocolate cinnamon candy... if you e-mail me your mailing address, I'll send you a little treat. :) grahamsherrie at yahoo dot ca
And happy not buying!
oooh sherrieg you are too, too, too kind!!!!!!

I love your list. I'll go on the "no buy" diet with you. I'm in need of one.
love your list!! wanta take a sewing class?
Love the list... I keep saying I'm going to take the kids to the Nasher Saturdays too (you know the DMA does those also).
I think your mantra of simplify, minimize, learn, create and appreciate is fabulous. I might just have to steal it for myself. :)
They sound perfect! You'll have to work at them, but they are all attainable.
Great list! I really should put #1 to the test as well...my bank account would really appreciate it :)
i would love not to buy anything for three months. i am too chicken to try it.
What a wonderful list! I think your 2009 mantra is beautiful.
sounds like my list!
miss aimee -- yes, let's for sure take a sewing class!
SInce you're in the Dallas area, thought I would pass on that there are great sewing classes at Make Shop and Studio in the Bishop Arts District.

Oh Joslyn, I just love your list, so many good things, but totally do-able too! My husband and I have been having a real grown up date every month, (nice place, white table clothes, real nice clothes, jewelry...hair done and contact, whew) since we met, and it has totally been the best thing we have done for ourselves. We say, ok, 7pm we meet in the living room, ready to go, not thinking about work, but really ready for the date, it is the best day of the month :) GOOD LUCK!
Ah! You are awesome my dear and not boring at all!
Those "little" things are way harder to accomplish than they seem, right? I love your list and wish you well!

loving that first image.
How funny, learning to sew is totally on my list too. Just seems like a good time, doesn't it? I couldn't possibly do the not buy anything new for 3 months. You just never know. I could maybe not make an effort to buy things - like, not go shopping, but that's about all I could promise! ;-)
Cheers and Happy New Year!
Hmmm. Maybe I could try not buying new things for a month, but so hard with all the good sales!
Aaah, Bikram. You should. It's challenging to fit the 90 min class into a schedule but it's worth it. It does wonders for your posture, sore muscles, flexibility, skin and peace of mind.
fantastic list, i believe i'll borrow it! also have 'write more letters' on mine. and your mantra is perfect indeed. best wishes!
wonderful mantra...you have inspired me to try for the same! wishing you a 2009 full of joy! loving your blog now i found it...will be back
